MINI tyres and servicing in Dubai
MINIs are small cars on big wheels. Many cars here left the factory on run-flats, which are stiff, expensive and generally not repairable - a nail usually means a new tyre, and there is no spare in the boot. Combine 40-section rubber with a short wheelbase and a villa community full of speed bumps and you get buckled rims and alignment that drifts.
Common MINI tyre sizes
- 195/55R16 (Cooper)
- 205/45R17 (Cooper S)
- 205/40R18 (John Cooper Works)
- 225/50R18 (Countryman)
- 225/45R19 (Countryman ALL4)
Always check the placard inside your driver’s door — trim levels and wheel options change the size, and a previous owner may have fitted something different.
The ★ marking on MINI tyres
A star on the sidewall means BMW and MINI signed off that exact tyre construction for the car - it is not a quality grade, and a non-star tyre in the correct size, load index and speed rating is a perfectly legitimate replacement.
We will tell you whether the tyre we are quoting carries the marking or not, and what the practical difference is. Some drivers reasonably choose a non-marked tyre to save money — that is a decision you should get to make knowingly.
Worth knowing in UAE conditions
- Run-flats are the default on most MINIs sold here. The reinforced sidewall runs hot, ages from the inside and cannot safely be plugged, so a puncture on the motorway is a new tyre rather than a repair - with no spare wheel to get you home.
- The electric water pump and thermostat on the earlier Cooper and Cooper S (N12, N14 and N16) is one of the most common jobs we see on this marque in Dubai. It fails hot, usually in July, and the first sign is the gauge climbing in traffic.
- Timing chain rattle on cold start on the N14 Cooper S, plus carbon build-up on the intake valves. Heat and short stop-start trips bring both on earlier than the mileage suggests.
- Underbonnet space is tight and everything cooks. Valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets harden and leak, and you smell burning oil on the exhaust well before you see a puddle on the driveway.
