Worth knowing in UAE conditions

• The EA211 and EA888 turbo engines use plastic water pump housings, thermostat housings and coolant flanges. They go brittle at Gulf underbonnet temperatures and start weeping coolant, usually somewhere you cannot see until the level drops.
• DSG gearboxes hate stop-start city driving with the A/C on maximum. The fluid runs hotter than the service interval assumes, and a wet-clutch DSG that has never had an oil and filter change is where the low-speed shudder comes from.
• Teramont and Touareg on 20 inch wheels take a beating on villa community speed bumps. We see buckled rims, tired top mounts and outer shoulder wear on the front tyres long before the tread is legally finished.
• Short trips in traffic never get the engine properly hot, so direct injection cars build carbon on the intake valves and the PCV diaphragm hardens. Rough idle, a whistle at idle and oil consumption tend to follow.
