The Jimny has become the default cheap desert car in Dubai and we see a lot of them, usually with oversized tyres and sand where sand should not be. The Vitara, Swift and Ertiga do the other half of the work, on school runs and private hire all over the city. They are simple, well-documented cars and honestly there is very little on them that needs a franchised dealer.

Always check the placard inside your driver’s door — trim levels and wheel options change the size, and a previous owner may have fitted something different.
Worth knowing in UAE conditions
- Jimnys come back from the dunes with sand in the air filter, sand in the diff breathers and tyres still at 14 psi. Driving back into Al Quoz on hot tarmac at desert pressure is what wrecks the sidewalls, and it happens on the drive home rather than on the sand.
- Oversized tyres on a Jimny, 215/75R15 and upwards, load the small wheel bearings and the recirculating ball steering box far harder than standard, and throw the speedometer and the ABS readings out with them.
- Ertigas run seven up in summer traffic, which is about the hardest duty there is for the rear shocks and the A/C. Weak rear cooling on an Ertiga is usually a starved system rather than a broken one.
- Condensers on a Swift or Baleno are small and block with sand quickly. There is no margin in them - once the fins are packed the cabin simply will not get cold in traffic.
