Almost nobody in The Greens or The Views bought their car new. Whoever sold you that Pajero or that Corolla had no reason to mention the tyres, and you had no real way to ask. The code sits in an oval stamp on one sidewall, four digits at the end: 3419 means the thirty-fourth week of 2019. Only one face of the tyre carries the full marking, so if you cannot find it, turn the wheels to full lock and look at the inside. A car that has passed through three owners in six years often carries two tyres from one pair and two from another, bought separately, years apart, matched only by size. Nothing about that is visible from the driver's seat.
A car being prepared for sale gets whatever makes it look ready: a wash, a polish, sometimes a fresh pair fitted to the axle a buyer walks up to first. The two that stay are the two nobody photographs. That is the pattern on most cars bought privately around this community, so we take the wheels off rather than judging by what shows with the car standing still. Cracking between the tread blocks and a hardened, shiny inner shoulder tell you far more than tread depth on its own.
Tyres are where we start because they are the cheapest thing to check and the easiest thing for a seller to leave unsaid. The rest follows the same logic: pad thickness measured against the disc rather than guessed from the pedal, the battery's own date code, coolant condition, how the gearbox behaves from cold and whether the steering sits square or the car was sold for a reason. The UAE caps tyre age at five years; there is a full page on that, so we will not repeat it here.
If the codes come back old, you are not automatically buying four tyres that afternoon. On a car of five to ten years we would rather do an axle at a time in matched pairs and set the alignment afterwards, so new rubber is not asked to correct something mechanical. If the codes come back fine, you have spent an hour and driven away knowing what you actually bought. Either result is worth more than the guess you are currently making about a car you have already paid for.

Out of the community onto First Al Khail Street and north-east on it the whole way into Al Quoz Industrial 3, which avoids Sheikh Zayed Road and every toll gate. The alternative is joining E11 at Dubai Internet City and leaving at Interchange 4 for Umm Suqeim Street, one exit up, though the Al Barsha Salik gate sits on that stretch. Empty roads make it about fifteen minutes; once the free zones empty out after five, allow something nearer twenty-three. Both figures are estimates.

Ten complexes, roughly forty buildings, none of them towers, and a resident population that turns over faster than almost anywhere else in the city. The cars follow. Five to ten-year-old Japanese and Korean saloons, a lot of RAV4s, Pajeros and Tucsons, mid-range German saloons on their second or third owner and small hatchbacks bought for the length of one posting. Very few are still running the tyres they left the showroom on, and fewer owners know when the current set went on.
Someone who has just handed over cash for a used car in Dubai knows the mileage, knows the service history if they are lucky and knows nothing at all about the age of the four things holding it to the road. The seller was never going to volunteer it. Reading the codes settles the question in minutes, and it usually opens straight into the rest of the check.

The retail inside the community runs to supermarkets, cafes and salons, and the car provision is the wash and valet operators working the parking levels. They will clean the wheels beautifully. They will not read the sidewalls or lift the car off its hubs. Nothing across the ten complexes is set up for inspection work, so the nearest genuine option is one of the workshop streets in Al Quoz, which is where you are going whichever garage you settle on. From First Al Khail Street it is short enough to fit in before the working day starts.
My contract ends next year and the car goes with me. Is it worth putting money into tyres now?
That depends on what the codes say, not on how long you are staying. Rubber that is already old will be older when you come to sell, and the person buying it will very likely be another new arrival in this same community having exactly the check you are having now. A car with four matched, in-date tyres and a written note of the codes sells faster and argues better on price. If the dates are fine, spend nothing there and put the money into whatever service is genuinely due.
The previous owner travelled constantly and the car sat unused for weeks at a time. Does that matter?
It matters more than mileage does. A car standing in the same bay loses pressure slowly, rests on one patch of rubber and ages in the heat whether or not anyone is driving it. Low mileage on a used car bought around here often means precisely that pattern rather than gentle ownership, because free-zone jobs on both sides of the community involve a lot of time out of the country. We look for flat spotting, perished sidewalls and one corner sitting lower than the other three. None of that shows on the odometer.
Can the check happen before I pay the seller rather than after?
Yes, and that is the sensible order. Ask the seller to meet you at the workshop or to release the car for an hour. Handovers in this community tend to move fast because the person selling is usually flying out within days, and that pressure is exactly what stops buyers looking properly. An hour on the ramp covers the date codes on all five tyres, pad and disc condition, battery age and the obvious mechanical faults. If a seller will not allow the car to be looked at, that is useful information in itself.
